I’ve just returned from a delightful hen’s weekend in the Blue Mountains – a world heritage listed mountainous region approximately 1.5 hours from Sydney in the state of New South Wales. If you ever find yourself in Australia I urge you to spend a few days there exploring the mountains, enjoying scenic walks and sampling the various cafes and restaurants.
One of the establishments I visited during the weekend was anonymous cafe in Blackheath, which prides itself on seasonal produce and speciality coffee. The menu is unique, thoughtful and a little outside of what you would normally see on a brunch menu. If you’re looking for a bacon and egg roll smothered in barbecue sauce or poached eggs with hollandaise sauce you may want to look elsewhere.
Before I get onto the food I’ll start with another important feature of any good cafe – the coffee. My coffee of choice is normally a long black or soy flat white depending on my mood. Coffees made with soy milk can be tricky as the milk tends to burn rather easily which can spoil the coffee. At anonymous cafe this definitely wasn’t an issue and I quickly finished my soy flat white whilst eagerly awaiting my next course.
Brunch is one of my favourite meals because it is a symbol of the weekend and a great way to lazily catch up with friends. I always try and encourage my brunch partner to order something different to me so that I can sample a couple of dishes – preferably sweet and savoury!
In this instance I got to enjoy:
Winter breakfast bruschetta of sweet labne, glazed pears and poached quince with cinnamon, honey, nuts and berries
This was spectacular and the presentation was gorgeous too!
House made baked beans infused with herbs and bacon bones. Served with whole field mushrooms, goats curd, roquette and sourdough toast
So next time you’re in Blackheath and you’re hankering for a delicious, unique breakfast or lunch, head to anonymous cafe!
